Overview
Previously the Deputy Director of Vitreo- retinal Services, at the world reknowned Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. Swakshyar Saumya Pal is an extremely knowledgeable, senior clinician and a surgeon par excellence with several years of experience in the field of Ophthalmology.
After completing his Masters of Surgery (Ophthalmology) at one of the top ranking colleges of the country, Manipal University, Dr. Pal was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Ophthalmology, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Science, Pondicherry.
He did his fellowship in Vitreo Retina at the prestigious Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai where he trained under the great teachers of Ophthalmology like Dr. Tarun Sharma and Dr. Lingam Gopal, who have trained some of the biggest names in Ophthalmology today. Not only was Dr. Pal judged the Best Outgoing Fellow of his time, he was also awarded the much coveted Gold Medal during his tenure as a fellow at Sankara Nethralaya. Dr. Pal has also received his fellowship from the International Council of Ophthalmology, United Kingdom.
During his decade long association with Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. Pal has always taken a keen interest in passing on his knowledge to others and has personally trained more than 20 fellows in vitreoretinal surgery (both from India and abroad). He has also been Project guide to BITS, Pilani students and a Coguide to DNB (Diplomate of the National Board) Students in Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. His academic prowess doesn’t end there – he was the co investigator and key person for the Sankara Nethralaya – Diabetic Retinopathy epidemiology and molecular genetics study Project, SN DREAMS II, SN DREAMS III, and SN CARE. He was also a co investigator in the VIEW II and FAM trials and has worked in collaboration with London School of Hygiene on the modeling of diabetic retinopathy screening in India.
Dr. Pal not only practices evidence based medicine, but is also a major contributor to various international journals. He has over 30 published articles in the field of Retina and is also a reviewer of 2 international journals viz. Clinical and experimental ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery Lasers and Imaging.
Though Dr. Pal is very proficient in all types of Ophthalmic surgeries, his areas of expertise are Retinopathy of Prematurity, Complex diabetic cases, all types of retinal detachment cases, Ocular oncology and Ocular trauma. He has performed more than 8000 complicated surgeries and is one of the top 3 retinal surgeons in the country in administering intravitreal injections.
